In Tanzania, the Great Migration is defined by two extraordinary phases: the Calving Season Safari and the River Crossing Safari, each offering unforgettable wildlife encounters.

From January to March, the Calving Safari delivers remarkable predator-prey interactions as thousands of newborn wildebeest enter the world. With more than 8,000 calves born each day, this season attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and other predators, creating thrilling and dramatic moments on the open plains. In contrast, the River Crossing Migration, occurring between July and August, showcases one of nature’s most iconic scenes as massive herds attempt to cross the Grumeti and Mara Rivers.

About the Migration Calving Season

The Migration Calving Season in the Serengeti is one of Africa’s most moving wildlife events, unfolding between January and March. During this time, the southern plains transform into a vast nursery as wildebeest, zebras, and other grazers gather to give birth. The sight of newborn calves learning to stand and run within minutes of birth brings the landscape to life, while nearby predators patiently wait for opportunity. This season beautifully captures the delicate balance between fragility and survival, offering a deeply humbling glimpse into nature’s most fundamental rhythms.

About the Migration Crossing Season

The Migration Crossing Season is a powerful and high-stakes chapter of the Great Migration, typically taking place from June through July. As the herds move northward, they are forced to confront the dangerous waters of the Mara River, where strong currents and lurking crocodiles pose constant threats. The tension builds as animals crowd the riverbanks, followed by explosive action when they finally commit to the crossing. This dramatic event is a striking display of instinct, endurance, and the raw force of nature, leaving viewers in awe of the relentless will to survive in the wild.
