A challenging night ascent on the sacred Mountain of God, rising above Lake Natron and the Rift Valley in northern Tanzania.

A closer look

A rare volcanic adventure above the Rift Valley

Oldonyo Lengai is an active volcano revered by the Maasai as the Mountain of God. The steep ascent normally begins at night to avoid the heat, leading to a sunrise above Lake Natron, the Ngorongoro highlands and the distant Serengeti. It is a demanding, specialised climb for fit travellers who want a wild and very different mountain experience.
